For most people, having alcohol now and then is unlikely to stop doxycycline from working, a 2020 evidence review found. The concern is heavy drinking most days. On a night you drink, plan two things: don't skip your dose, and don't swallow it right before you fall asleep.

Can You Drink Alcohol While Taking Doxycycline?
Usually, yes. The 2020 review concluded that "Alcohol may be consumed with doxycycline." The US label does not mention drinking alcohol. The NHS is more cautious and says it's best not to drink. The review found no data on doxycycline and alcohol causing toxic or harmful reactions together. The worry in the research is long-term heavy drinking, not one night out.
No label or guideline we checked gives a safe number of drinks, so this page won't either. If your prescriber told you not to drink, follow that.
Should You Skip a Doxycycline Dose So You Can Drink?
No. Keep your normal schedule on the day of a wedding or a party. The US label warns that "Skipping doses or not completing the full course of therapy may (1) decrease the effectiveness of the immediate treatment and (2) increase the likelihood that bacteria will develop resistance."
Don't double up the next day, either. The NHS says: "Do not take 2 doses to make up for a missed dose." Here's what to do about a missed dose of doxycycline, and what to do if you accidentally took a double dose of doxycycline.
If your evening dose lands while you're out or right before bed, ask your pharmacist a day ahead about taking it earlier, such as with dinner.
Can You Take Your Evening Dose After Drinking?
Yes, but this is the dose to be careful with. Doxycycline can irritate the esophagus (the tube from your mouth to your stomach) and even cause ulcers there. Of the people with these injuries, the US label notes, "Most of these patients took medications immediately before going to bed."
After a few drinks, that's an easy mistake. You get home, swallow the pill, and fall asleep. The NHS says to swallow it "with a glass of water while sitting or standing up" and to "avoid lying down for at least 30 minutes after taking it." The UK label says to take it "well before retiring at night." Here is why you can't lay down after taking doxycycline.
Already Drank on Doxycycline? Did It Stop Working?
One night of drinking is unlikely to undo your course. The 2020 review sums up the human data: "acute intake of alcohol is unlikely to impact therapeutic levels of doxycycline."
What can matter is a dose you missed or took late because of the drinking. Don't add pills or stretch the course on your own. If you missed more than one dose, or your symptoms aren't improving or come back, call your prescriber or pharmacist. They decide whether you need more.
If it's for chlamydia. The CDC's 2021 STI guidelines say a test of cure (a repeat test about 4 weeks after treatment) "is not advised for nonpregnant persons treated with the recommended or alternative regimens, unless therapeutic adherence is in question, symptoms persist, or reinfection is suspected." Missed doses are an adherence question, so tell your provider about them. The CDC also says people treated for chlamydia "should be retested approximately 3 months after treatment," and should avoid sex until the 7-day course is done, any symptoms are gone and their partners have been treated.
How Long After Doxycycline Can You Drink Alcohol?
No label sets a waiting time for doxycycline, whether before a dose, after a dose or after your last pill. We checked the US, UK and Oracea labels and the NHS page.
Around a dose, what matters is taking the pill with water and staying upright afterward.
As for the day after your last pill, the 72-hour rule you may have heard comes from the metronidazole and tinidazole labels. Doxycycline's half-life is 18 to 22 hours, per the US label, so it takes a few days to clear.
If your prescriber gave you a different rule, follow theirs. Our guide to medication and alcohol timing covers the drugs that do have a waiting rule.
Does Heavy Drinking Make Doxycycline Work Less Well?
It might. The main human evidence we found is a small 1976 study that compared six people the study calls "alcoholics" with six healthy controls. Doxycycline's half-life, the time it takes for half the drug to leave your blood, was 10.5 hours in the heavy drinkers and 14.7 hours in the controls, the 2020 review reports.
The study abstract says "in some patients the serum concentration of doxycycline decreased below the generally accepted minimum therapeutic concentration when dosed once daily." The UK label says "Alcohol may decrease the half-life of doxycycline." The NHS lists "problems with alcohol dependence" among the reasons doxycycline may not be suitable.
If you drink most days, tell your prescriber before you start, so they can choose the schedule.
Does It Matter How Much You Drink, or Whether It's Beer, Wine or Liquor?
A US standard drink holds about 14 grams of alcohol: a 12-ounce beer at 5%, a 5-ounce glass of wine at 12% or a 1.5-ounce shot at 40%, according to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA).
A 1982 study in six healthy students tested whisky and a cheap red wine. Neither drink significantly changed how much doxycycline was absorbed:
- Whisky. In six healthy students, a dose of whisky set by body weight "did not modify significantly the absorption of 200 mg of doxycycline." The study checked absorption, not safety.
- Cheap red wine. A wine "with a clear taste of acetic acid postponed the absorption" by 2 to 3 hours, without a significant change in the total drug level over 24 hours.
Can You Drink on Doxycycline for Acne, Rosacea, Chlamydia, Malaria or Lyme?
| Why you're taking it | What the course looks like | What to watch if you drink |
|---|---|---|
| Chlamydia | Twice a day for 7 days (CDC) | A skipped or late dose |
| Doxy-PEP after sex | One dose as soon as possible within 72 hours after sex, and no more than one dose in 24 hours (CDC) | Lying down too soon: the CDC says stay upright for 1 hour |
| Lyme prevention after a tick bite | For a high-risk tick bite, one adult dose within 72 hours of removing the tick (IDSA) | Same single dose as the whisky study |
| Malaria prevention | Daily, starting 1 to 2 days before the trip and ending 4 weeks after you leave, for no more than 4 months (US label) | Missed doses |
| Acne | Daily, often for weeks or months | Your usual drinking pattern, not one night |
| Rosacea (Oracea 40 mg) | Once a day in the morning, on an empty stomach | How much you drink most days |
Acne and rosacea. Oracea, a 40 mg capsule for rosacea bumps, is taken "1 time a day in the morning on an empty stomach." Its label says the levels it reaches "are less than the concentration required to treat bacterial diseases." The 1976 study judged levels against the amount needed to fight bacteria, which Oracea stays under anyway, and it did not test Oracea. The Oracea label does not mention alcohol. If you drink most days, tell your prescriber anyway.
What Do the US Label, UK Label and NHS Say About Alcohol?
They don't agree.
| Source | What it says about alcohol |
|---|---|
| US label (FDA label on DailyMed) | Nothing about drinking alcohol. |
| UK label (SmPC) | "Alcohol may decrease the half-life of doxycycline." |
| NHS patient guide | "it's best not to drink alcohol because it can stop the medicine working properly." |
| 2020 evidence review | "Alcohol may be consumed with doxycycline. Chronic alcoholics may require twice daily dosing of doxycycline." |
The US label lists the drugs that shorten doxycycline's half-life: "Barbiturates, carbamazepine, and phenytoin decrease the half-life of doxycycline." Alcohol is not on that list. The UK label names the same three drugs, says a higher daily dose "should be considered" for them, then adds the alcohol line with no dosing advice.
How Pillo Helps
On a night out, the evening dose is the easy one to miss, or to swallow right before bed. Pillo's persistent alarm keeps going until you deal with it, even in a noisy bar. Set it early enough that you'll be upright for at least 30 minutes afterward, and check your dose history the next morning if you can't remember taking it. Download Pillo on Google Play
FAQ
Can I take Tums or Pepto-Bismol near my doxycycline dose?
Not at the same time, even after a night out. The US label says doxycycline's absorption "is impaired by antacids containing aluminum, calcium, or magnesium, bismuth subsalicylate, and iron-containing preparations." Tums is calcium carbonate and Pepto-Bismol is bismuth subsalicylate, per their labels. The US label gives no number of hours to space them, and the UK label says only that doses "should be maximally separated." The CDC's doxy-PEP guidelines advise keeping the dose at least 2 hours apart from antacids. Ask your pharmacist how far apart to take them.
I drink every day. Should I stop while I'm on doxycycline?
Talk to your prescriber first, and tell them how much you drink. Don't stop suddenly on your own. The NHS warns: "It can be very dangerous to stop drinking suddenly if you're dependent on alcohol. If you get withdrawal symptoms, get medical help before you try to stop drinking."
Is a headache after drinking on doxycycline just a hangover?
It may be. Headaches and nausea are common doxycycline side effects, per the NHS (see what helps with doxycycline nausea), and typical hangover symptoms, per the NIAAA. But call your doctor right away about blurry or double vision, with or without a headache. The US label links doxycycline to raised pressure around the brain, with signs including "headache, blurred vision, diplopia, and vision loss" (diplopia means double vision). Oracea's leaflet says to stop taking it and tell your doctor right away for "blurred vision, vision loss, or unusual headaches."
Can I have one beer or one glass of wine on doxycycline?
For most people on a short course, one drink is unlikely to change how well doxycycline works, based on the 2020 review. Keep your dose on schedule.
